I have a blueberry bush and a raspberry bush I need to get in the ground.  I'm in zone 3a, so winter is fast approaching.  I've been told by one person not to use any fertilizer because I don't want to encourage growth of any sort at this time and by someone else to use starter fertilizer to encourage root development before the ground freezes.  ( Read more... )

In a few weeks I'm going to be working on improving the soil in my berry bed, even though things are already planted there it still needs work. I'm going to be picking out more (!) rocks, and adding some mulch. Before I throw down mulch, would it be a good idea to put down some humus and then cover that with the mulch? There are a lot of little brown "rusty" spots on my strawberry leaves, some on my raspberries and other berry bushes I have planted near them. I just planted them last weekend and they were fine before then, but this week has been really rainy, foggy, humid and warm ( Read more... )

Garden as it actually exists now. Green background is temporary grass clipping mulch, brown is more long term pine mulch. White graph paperish area is not yet tilled or planted. Corn is in the ground but future will include raised beds in this area. Raspberries are in ground and will stay there.

Last year was our first year in our new home. We were lucky enough to find a yard that had a ton of existing things that I'd always wanted to grow. Raspberries, peaches, plums, two types of cherries and two types of grapes! Last year the raspberries were AMAZING. not a lot of maintenance to do, and AMAZING yield. The berries were giant! I planted some onions last year in my garden, but I think it was probably waaaayy too late in the season, and they didn't really grow very much. This year, however, I started raking the leaves off of my garden, and there they are again, already growing.
